Black pepper may not be as hot as cayenne, but it can keep up with it in terms of healthful benefits. Black pepper is known to have anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties, on top of its anti-inflammatory abilities.

Cloves have not yet been scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory properties, but have been used in traditional medicine in that capacity for a long time. You can use them whole in teas or hot drinks, or powdered in baking and some savoury dishes.

Adding these anti-inflammatory spices to your diet will help to ease the pain of arthritis, but it may be difficult to judge whether you are getting enough of them to make a difference. There have also been questions about whether supplements actually contain the specified compound, so it may be best to purchase these spices in the organic section of your local grocery store, as that would appear to be the best way to ensure that you are getting what you’re paying for.

Many people add some combination of these spices into smoothies, which seem to solve the dosage problem neatly, and allow you to get large enough amounts to ensure effectiveness. No matter how you choose to take them, though, it is likely that you will reduce your joint pain without risking the side effects of prescription drugs.
